Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D)

The 5-year Pharm.D curriculum is comprehensive, moving from foundational sciences in the early years to advanced clinical training and manufacturing in the final years.

Regulated by the Pharmacy Council of Pakistan and aligned with the University of the Punjab standards, the core curriculum is divided into five main professional domains:

1. Pharmaceutics (Medication Formulation & Design)

This area covers how raw chemical drugs are turned into safe, effective, and usable medicines (like tablets, syrups, injections, and ointments).

• Physical Pharmacy: The physical and chemical principles behind drug formulations.

• Pharmaceutical Technology & Biopharmaceutics: Industrial manufacturing processes, machinery, and how drugs dissolve and absorb in the body.

• Dispensing & Community Pharmacy: The art of compounding medicines, reading prescriptions, and managing retail pharmacy operations.

• Quality Management: Testing standards to ensure every batch of medicine is pure, safe, and effective.

2. Pharmacology & Therapeutics (How Drugs Work)

This is the core scientific link between pharmacy and medicine, focusing on how drugs interact with the living body to cure diseases.

• General Pharmacology: How drugs travel through the body (absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion) and their mechanisms of action.

• Systemic Pharmacology: Detailed study of drugs acting on specific body systems (e.g., cardiovascular, central nervous system, respiratory system).

• Clinical Therapeutics: Applying drug knowledge to treat specific diseases, managing side effects, and avoiding dangerous drug-to-drug interactions.

3. Pharmaceutical Chemistry (The Science of Drugs)

This domain focuses on the molecular structure, synthesis, and chemical analysis of both natural and synthetic drug components.

• Organic & Inorganic Chemistry: Foundations of chemical structures used in medicine.

• Medicinal Chemistry: Designing and synthesizing new drug compounds.

• Pharmaceutical Analysis: Utilizing advanced laboratory instruments (like HPLC, UV spectroscopy) to analyze the purity and concentration of chemical substances.

4. Pharmacognosy (Medicines from Natural Sources)

Pakistan has a rich history of traditional and herbal medicine. This subject studies natural drugs derived from plants, microbes, and animals.

• Crude Drugs: Isolation and identification of active chemical compounds in medicinal plants.

• Alternative Medicine: Study of traditional systems of medicine (like Unani or Homeopathy) alongside modern herbal standardization and toxicity.

5. Clinical Pharmacy & Practice (Direct Patient Care)

Taught extensively in the final years, this domain shifts the student from the laboratory to the hospital ward.

• Hospital Pharmacy: Managing drug supply chains, inventory, and sterile preparation units within a hospital.

• Clinical Pharmacy: Participating in ward rounds, taking patient medication histories, checking dosages, and preventing adverse drug reactions.

• Pharmacy Law & Ethics (Forensic Pharmacy): Understanding the legal framework governing pharmacy in Pakistan, including the Drugs Act 1976 and DRAP regulations.
